East Chicago Man Arrested After Forcibly Entering Apartment and Resisting Officers
East Chicago-An East Chicago man is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after police say he unlawfully entered an upstairs apartment, damaged property, and resisted arrest when officers responded late Sunday night.
According to the probable cause affidavit, on October 19, 2025, around 11:53 p.m., East Chicago Police were dispatched to the 3700 block of Deodar Street in reference to a report of trespassing.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with the property owner, who told police an unknown Hispanic male had damaged the front entry door and unlawfully entered the second-floor apartment. The owner told officers the man was still inside and had no legal or contractual right to be in the building.
Officers proceeded upstairs and encountered Luis Octavio Salgado-Benavides, 23, who opened the door wearing dark gray jeans and white shoes. Officers noted he had visible injuries, including bleeding from the nose, chin, and forehead.
Because Salgado-Benavides only spoke Spanish, communication was initially difficult. When officers motioned for him to step into the hallway, Salgado-Benavides attempted to retreat and forcibly close the door. Officers grabbed his arm to prevent him from barricading himself, but the suspect actively resisted by clinging to the doorframe.
Once pulled into the hallway, Salgado-Benavides continued to resist by tensing his body and pulling away, ignoring commands in Spanish. Officers were ultimately able to place Salgado-Benavides in handcuffs without further incident.
He was transported to the East Chicago City Jail. During booking, police say he gave three different names and a birth year of 2022 before his identity was confirmed.
