East Chicago Man Charged After Traffic Stop Leads To Discovery Of Allegedly Fake Identification Cards

East Chicago- Reyson Alexander Medina Velasquez, 26, of East Chicago, is facing misdemeanor charges after officers were unable to verify his identity during a traffic stop at 149th Street and Euclid Avenue.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on January 26, 2026 at approximately 8:33 PM, an officer was patrolling the area when he observed a white in color Ford sedan, which returns to black in color Ford sedan. The officer activated his emergency lights and sirens and curbed the vehicle at 149th Street and Euclid Avenue.

The officer approached the vehicle from the passenger side and made contact with the Hispanic male driver. The driver identified himself by self-admission as Reyson Medina. The officer attempted to run Medina’s name through the computer and dispatch but did not get a return. Medina then advised officers that his last name was Medina Velasquez and that he had previously received a driver’s license in Illinois. Officers again attempted to run his name with the new information and still could not get a return.

Medina told officers the only identification he had on him was a Venezuelan identification card. Officers located a wallet in his possession that contained a Social Security card. Dispatch advised there was no return for that social security number.

Officers advised Medina to step out of the vehicle and that he was under arrest. He did so without issue and was placed into properly locked wrist restraints. While enroute to the East Chicago Police Department, Medina reportedly stated that “getting arrested for driving without a license is stupid.”

While searching Medina’s property at the police department, officers located a United States Permanent Resident Card in his wallet. Officers observed the social security card to be a different color with a white border along the top. Officers also observed the resident card to not be holographic and for some parts of the card to not be embedded.

Lodged in the Lake County Jail.

Charges filed January 28,2026:

  • False Government Issued Identification — Class A Misdemeanor
  • Operating A Motor Vehicle Without Ever Receiving A License — Class C Misdemeanor
