East Chicago Medics & Police Respond To EC Central For Overdoses

On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at approximately 9:30 AM, medics were dispatched to East Chicago Central High School in reference to an overdose. Due to the nature of the call, police officers responded with the medics, according to Chief Jose Rivera.

Upon arrival, officers were informed by security personnel that several students ingested some gummies that were laced with an unknown substance. One juvenile was transported to St. Catherine Hospital and several other juveniles were released to their parents. As of 2:00 PM, two more juveniles were taken to St. Catherine Hospital by their parents. This incident was reported in the RNS subscribers group as it was taking place.

The East Chicago Criminal Investigation Division is currently investigating this incident. One juvenile has been taken into custody for possession of a controlled substance and dealing a controlled substance. That juvenile will be transported to the Lake County Juvenile Center for processing.

Any parents with questions or concerns regarding this incident are asked to contact the school city of East Chicago, Rivera stated.
