East Chicago Officer Involved Shooting Saturday Morning

On August 5, 2023 at 3 AM, East Chicago Police Officers were dispatched to 4826 Melville Avenue in reference to ShotSpotter alerting to 10 rounds being fired, according to Chief Jose Rivera.

While officers were en route, Shotspotter alerted to 13 more rounds fired at 4756 Melville Avenue and 5 more rounds fired near 4750 Melville Avenue.

Officers arrived on scene and observed a male subject exiting the alley of where Shotspotter alerted to the shots fired. Officers gave commands to the male to stop. The male refused and fled from officers. Officers chased the male on foot. During the foot pursuit, officers observed the male pull out what they believed to be a semi-automatic handgun.

Shots were fired by officers and the subject was struck 1 time in the upper torso. The subject was transported to St Catherine Hospital and subsequently transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in stable condition. The Lake County Sheriff Department Crime Lab and Detective Bureau were called out to investigate the officer involved shooting.

This is an ongoing investigation and no further information will be released.
