Hammond/ East Chicago- A 19-year-old East Chicago man, Marvell Gregory Ja Shaw Rocquemore, has been charged in Lake County, after police say he stole a key fob from a locker at the Hammond YMCA and drove away in another member’s 2016 Chevrolet Camaro.
According to court documents, a Hammond police officer was dispatched around 9:23 p.m. on November 4, 2025, to the YMCA located in the 6500 block of Indianapolis Boulevard after a man reported his key fob missing and his black 2016 Chevrolet Camaro stolen from the parking lot.
Before arriving, the officer used nearby license plate reader cameras and observed the Camaro traveling northbound near the 6100 block of Indianapolis Boulevard toward East Chicago around 9:12 p.m. Dispatch then notified East Chicago Police to be on the lookout for the vehicle.
At the YMCA, staff reviewed security video with the officer. Footage showed a dark-skinned man with long black hair, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and a backpack, approach the locker where the victim said he left his belongings around 9:06 p.m. The same man had been seen earlier on the basketball courts wearing a red T-shirt under the sweatshirt.
At 9:07 p.m., the man was seen leaving the main entrance toward the east parking lot. Around 9:08 p.m., he walked through the lot with another person wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a backpack, and the Camaro’s lights began flashing. At 9:10 p.m., the man in gray was seen entering the driver’s seat, while the second person entered the rear passenger side of the Camaro.
While still reviewing the footage, dispatch advised that East Chicago Police had located the Camaro at Tod Park on McShane Drive and were in a foot pursuit with the occupants. East Chicago officers later reported three of the four individuals involved were taken into custody.
The Hammond officer responded to Tod Park and confirmed the driver matched the description from the YMCA footage. The driver identified himself as Marvell G. Rocquemore.
