EC Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Bar Shooting Friday
On Friday August 19, 2022 at approximately 2:16 AM, East Chicago Police Officer’s were dispatched to St. Catherine’s Hospital Emergency Room in reference to a disturbance, according to Chief Jose Rivera.
Upon arrival Officers did not observe a disturbance, but they were advised by medical staff that they had a walk in gunshot victim in the emergency room.
The victim was identified as 43 year old Daniel A. Ramirez of East Chicago, Rivera stated. The victim suffered from several gunshot wounds to the chest, abdomen and right bicep area. The victim was stabilized by ER staff and transported to a Chicago area hospital in serious condition.
While Officers were gathering information in the emergency room they heard a disturbance coming from the emergency room lobby. Upon entering the lobby they made contact with 24 year old Justin A. Gomez who was the cause of the disturbance. As Officers attempted to calm down Mr. Gomez, a witness came forward and identified Justin A. Gomez as the shooter. Witnesses stated that they were inside Sombrero Bar, located at 2001 Broadway in East Chicago, when Justin A. Gomez pulled out a gun and shot Daniel Ramirez numerous times.
Officers took Justin A. Gomez into custody, so that he could be interviewed by the EC Criminal Investigation Division. Detective Isaac Washington interviewed Justin A. Gomez as well as the witnesses to the shooting. A short time later Detective Washington was able to secure the following charges against Justin A. Gomez:
1 count of Attempted Murder (Level 1 Felony)
1 count of Aggravated Battery (Level 3 Felony)
1 count of Batter by Means of a Deadly Weapon (Level 5 Felony)
1 count of Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury (Level 5 Felony)
