EC Officer Rammed By Suspects Leading To Officers Shooting Two Suspects
On Wednesday August 11, 2021 at approximately 9:00 a.m. East Chicago Police Officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic infraction in the area of Indianapolis Blvd. and Chicago Avenue, Deputy Chief Jose Rivera told RNS. The vehicle refused to stop and intentionally struck another squad car pinning one Officer in his squad car. The offending vehicle continued to accelerate into the squad car in an attempt to get away. A second Probationary Officer who was in the squad car with the trapped Officer exited the squad car and fired shots into the offending vehicle in order to get the suspect to stop accelerating into the squad car where the Officer was trapped inside, Rivera stated.
The driver and passenger of the offending vehicle were struck by gunfire and transported to Chicago area hospitals for treatment. The injured Officer was transported to St. Catherine’s Hospital for treatment for a possible fractured leg.
The Lake County Sheriff Department was called out to investigate the shooting and process the crime scene. The names of the offenders and Officers will not be released at this time, police said.
