EC Police Investigating Homicide
On Saturday, July 23, 2022 at approximately 9:33 PM, East Chicago Police Officers were on the 4800 block of Melville Avenue on an assault call, according to Chief Jose Rivera.
While on scene officers heard approximately 8 shots fired coming from the 4800 block of Alexander Avenue, which was around the block from where they were, Rivera said. Officers returned to their police cars and proceeded to the 4800 block of Alexander Avenue. As Officers proceeded to 4800 Alexander Avenue, ShotSpotter alerted to 8 rounds in front of 4848 Alexander Avenue.
As Officers arrived on scene they observed a male subject lying in the road just north of 4848 Alexander Avenue, Rivera said. Officers approached the male subject and observed that he had a gunshot wound to the chest area. The male subject was breathing slow and not responding to Officers.
Medics arrived on scene and transported the male subject to St. Catherine Hospital for treatment. The male subject subsequently succumbed to his wound at the emergency room and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The victim was identified at the hospital by family as 27 year old Shaquille K. Russel of East Chicago.
The Criminal Investigation Division was called out to the scene to investigate the homicide and process the scene.
