Munster 45th Street Update Numbers

This was sent in by Munster’s own K.C. Willis on an update of the Calumet / 45th street underpass project and a look at analogies.

A Historic Night for the 45th Street Grade Separation Project in Munster. First concrete pour happened overnight.

BOTTOM SLAB: By The Numbers

Note: This is just one of the 5 parts
(3 WALLS and TOP SLAB will be completed in weeks/months to come)

CONCRETE (Bottom Slab):
1,114.4 – Cubic Yards
4,513,320 – Total LBs
123 – Concrete Trucks (@9.0cuyd/truck)

Analogy:

There is enough concrete in the BOTTOM SLAB to make a sidewalk (4” Deep, 36” Wide) from Munster Donut to Lost Marsh Golf Course.

STEEL (Bottom Slab):
9,206 – Steel Bars
591,425 – Total LBs
193,813 – Total Linear Feet

Analogies:

Total Weight in steel is the equivalent weight of 131 Ford F-150s.

If the steel bars were welded end to end, it would travel from Munster High School to Northwestern University.

If you were to point the same welded steel straight into the sky, it would be more than halfway to outer space (~62miles).

Total Miles of Steel: 36

Total Cumulative Weight of Concrete and Steel: 5,104,745lbs / 2552 Tons…
~11 Locomotives
~57 Boeing 737s
~146 Fire Engines
~1,575 Toyota Camrys
~212,697 Adult Foxes
~158,247,095 Empty Pop Cans

And that’s just for the BOTTOM!
