Family Dollar Destroyed After Fire Thursday
On Thursday, October 17, 2024, around 6:00 PM, Gary Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Family Dollar located at 1401 Massachusetts St, according to a release from Gary Fire.
Upon arrival heavy smoke was visible and crews made an initial entry. As the fire escalated, crews quickly transitioned to a defensive attack to get the fire under control. There were no serious injuries reported.
Mutual aid played a crucial role with assistance from Merrillville in the fire attack, while Portage, Lake Ridge, East Chicago, Porter and Griffith sent fill-in units to maintain city coverage during the incident. Homeland Security also provided support on-site, Gary Officials said.
After several hours of hard work, the fire was knocked down, contained, and extinguished. Crews remained on scene into the night, handling hotspots throughout the demolition process. Gary General Services responded to begin demolition efforts.
