Fatal Crash Overnight In Hammond
Shortly after 2 AM, Hammond Police & Fire responded to 165th & Moraine for a single vehicle crash with injuries.
On arrival officers found a black Charger with two occupants that were trapped in the car after it had struck a tree. The vehicle appeared to have been traveling eastbound on 165th from the state line and lost control near the curve.
Hammond Fire Firefighters extricated the passenger and transported that individual to an Illinois hospital. The driver was extricated and declared deceased on scene.
The Lake County Coroner has identified the deceased as Carlos Mata, 20, of Hammond.
A light mist had come down overnight causing some roadways to become slick which may have played a factor in this crash.
The roadway was opened back up at 4:30 AM.
