
Fatal Fire In Portage Under Investigation
On Saturday, July 5, 2025, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Portage Fire Department was dispatched to 369 Camelot Estates for a reported structure fire with possible entrapment, according to Portage Deputy Chief Himan.
Upon arrival, fire crews encountered a working fire in a single-story manufactured home, with visible flames and heavy smoke showing from the north end of the residence. Firefighters immediately initiated both suppression and search and rescue operations.
During these operations, crews located an unresponsive adult male in a bedroom on the south end of the home. The individual was quickly removed from the residence, and lifesaving measures were initiated at the scene. He was transported to a local medical facility, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The Portage Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Team, in coordination with the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, responded to the scene to investigate the incident. The cause remains under investigation at this time.
Update – The Lake County Coroner has identified the deceased as Inikko Irizarry, 24, of Portage. His death was ruled accidental due to smoke inhalation.
The Portage Fire Department extended their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim.
