Fatal Fire Near Lowell Tuesday

On June 18, 2024 at approximately 6:28 PM, a the Lowell Fire Department was dispatched to a mobile home fire located in the 100 block of Baldwin Road located in the Mobile Home Community of Apple Valley which is in unincorporated Eagle Creek Township, according to Lowell Fire Officials.

A fire command unit along with Tri-Creek EMS were first to arrive and met with heavy fire involvement and a report of one person trapped in the home. Due to the proximity of other homes, entrapment, and the advanced stage of the fire, mutual aid was requested from neighboring fire departments and further upgraded to request personnel and water from 13 additional fire departments.

Lowell firefighters from the first arriving engine were able pull a hose line assemble a rescue team and make entry into heavy smoke and fire conditions to locate the victim in a part of the home that was heavily involved with fire. They removed the victim from the home and placed the victim in the care of EMS, however, due to the extent of injuries the victim was pronounced deceased on scene, officials said in a press release. The identity of the victim has not been released.

The other occupant of the home, the homeowner, was located and evaluated by EMS on scene, and was not transported to an area hospital. There were no reported firefighter injuries or illness on the scene.

The cause and details of the fire is currently under investigation by the Lowell Fire Department Arson Investigation Division, Indiana Department of Homeland Security Division of Fire & Building Safety Office of the State Fire Marshal, Crown Point Fire Rescue: Arson Investigation K9, Lake County Sherriff’s Detective Division, and Lake County Coroners Officer.
