Fatal Lansing Apartment Fire Injures Two Who Jumped From Windows
On November 2, 2020, at approximately 3:18AM the Lansing Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure fire in an apartment building located at 3052 Bernice Ave, according to Deputy Chief John Grady.
Units arrived within four minutes to find heavy fire from multiple floors of a three-story apartment building. Fire crews, assisted by Lansing Police Officers, were able to rescue several occupants. A Box Alarm was requested for additional manpower and apparatus and the fire was brought under control within an hour, Grady stated.
There is one confirmed fatality from this incident, Grady regretfully informed the media. The victim is a 49 year old female. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family. Two civilians and three Lansing Police Officers were transported to area hospitals. The three officers have been treated and released. The conditions of the civilians are unknown at this time. The civilians reportedly jumped from windows of the third floor to escape flames according to witnesses. Red Cross has been contacted to assist all displaced residents.
The origin and cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Lansing Arson Investigators, Lansing Police Department, MABAS 24 Investigators, and the State Fire Marshall’s Investigators are all actively involved. Lansing was assisted by Calument City, South Holland, Munster, Lynwood, Glenwood, Thornton, Homewood, Burnham, East Hazel Crest, Flossmoor, Tinley Park, and Bud’s Ambulance.
