17 Year Old Female Shot In East Chicago On 149th & Walsh

One 17 year old female was shot in the cheek below her eye in East Chicago on 149th & Walsh around 5:39pm Thursday. The victim is a 17 year old girl who was a reported runaway, Deputy Chief Jose Rivera of The East Chicago Police said. Multiple witnesses in the neighborhood heard multiple gun shots before they came outside to see a car crashed. Rivera said shot spotter detected 12 rounds fired in the area and one officer in the area also heard the shots fired. The victim was driving a Pontiac Sunfire on Walsh Ave when she was shot and crashed into a parked van. The victim has a family members house near by the scene and she tried to get to the house but didn’t make it before collapsing. East Chicago Fire Department attempted to get a Medivac Helicopter to transport but the next available helicopter was 25 minutes out. The victim was transported to NorthLake Methodist and her condition is serious at this time Rivera stated. We have learned the victim is being airlifted from Northlake to Chicago. The bullet is lodged in her but she is currently talking and stable.
