Fireworks Spark House Fire Saturday

Fireworks cause residence home to go up in flames on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at around 6:40 PM in the 400 East block of U.S. Highway 6 in Jackson Township.

All occupants were out before fire resources arrived on scene. Fire Chief Brian Duncan requested for a Tanker Plan 1 and a First Alarm Assignment which brought in additional resources, Liberty Township Officials stated.

Fire crews laid in nearly 300 feet of supply hose from the highway to the fire to feed the primary engine that was nearest to the fire in order to continue with fire suppression efforts. The fire started just outside the garage attached to the residence which caused the garage to catch fire and make its way through the attic of the home. Fire crews were successful in containing the fire in the garage and attic with minimal damage to the living quarters from smoke and water extension.
The cause of the fire after investigating was caused by fireworks not properly disposed of after use, officials told RNS.

Traveling motorist in the area may have experience slight delays and road closures along U.S. Highway 6 to help protect fire crews from high speed traffic.

Liberty received mutual aid resources from Westville Community, South Haven, Pines, Chesterton, Washington Township Fire Departments. Porter Fire Department provided coverage for Liberty Township Fire Department’s coverage area while working the residential fire.

“Liberty encourages area residents to join their local fire department as more than 80% of the Porter County is protected by Volunteers,” officials have added.
