Further Charges Locked In Against Region Bank Robber
On August 24, 2021, Garrett S. Lecyk was charged through the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for a bank robbery that occurred in Hobart at the Chase Bank on June 12, 2021. Mr. Lecyk was charged with the following charges:
Count I: Armed Robbery Level 3 Felony
Count II: Attempted Armed Robbery Level 3 Felony
Count III: Robbery Level 5 Felony
Count IV: Attempted Robbery Level 5 Felony
On June 12, 2021, Garrett Lecyk is suspected of entering the Chase Bank, located in downtown Hobart, the suspect presented a bank employee with a note, which stated to give him $3500.00 dollars and he lifted his shirt and displayed what appeared to be a black pistol tucked in his waistband.
Furthermore, the bank employee told police that he told her he had a gun and not to do anything stupid. The bank employee told Officers that she was in fear, but when she attempted to obtain money from one of the machines it didn’t work, and she then directed him to go to another bank employee, Hobart Police told RNS .
The suspect approached the other bank employee and he approached her and demanded $3,500.00 dollars, she told Officers that the suspect was implying he had a gun, and he was touching his left side. She told Officers that the suspect told her not to press any buttons, she further stated that she gave the suspect money from her drawer, and he fled the bank.
After the robbery, Officers began to canvas the area for surveillance images of the suspect and or vehicle, which they were able to see the suspect walk towards a parking lot in the vicinity of the bank and he leaves the view of the surveillance camera and then a short time later a possible Gray colored Jeep Compass is shown leaving the parking lot.
Officers collected the note that the suspect gave to the bank employee and the Detective later examined the note. The Detective observed printing on at the top of the note that was directly associated with the Crown Point Fire Department. The Detective contacted the Crown Point Fire Department, and he was told that those letters are issued to ambulance patients and the Detective received approximately 70 records from the fire department from people who used their ambulance service.
Detectives conducted follow-up investigative inquiries on the persons listed in the records, which Garrett Lecyk was one of the people they followed up on, but when they went to his home, no one answered the door, and there wasn’t a vehicle on the property. The Detectives added Mr. Lecyk’s address to a revisit list.
After the bank was robbed in Hammond on August 16, 2021, and Hobart Detectives took Mr. Lecyk into custody, and they realized he was on the revisit list for the investigation for the Chase bank robbery.
According to Detectives, they interviewed a family member that resided at the residence Mr. Lecyk used for his permanent address. The family member told Detectives that he owned a gray colored Jeep Compass and that he would let Garrett use the vehicle from time to time, he further told Detectives that the vehicle had been involved a crash recently and he no longer had the vehicle. The vehicle that the family member described did match the vehicle seen on surveillance images leaving the area of the Chase bank on June 12, 2021.
Mr. Lecyk is currently in custody in the Lake County Jail and according to police records he is currently being held on a $10,000.00 cash bond for the Chase bank robbery.
Mr. Lecyk is presumed innocent, until proven guilty in the court of law.
