Gary Man Accused of Assaulting Woman at Merrillville Hotel
According to court documents, a 58-year-old Gary man is facing a felony charge following a violent altercation at a Motel 6 in Merrillville.
Officers arrived to find the woman crying and bleeding from the mouth, wearing a bloodstained white shirt and no pants. The room was in disarray with blood on the floor, bedding, scattered clothes, two empty liquor bottles, and pills labeled “56” on the counters.
Darryl Mahaffey was charged on July 7, 2025, for the July 4 incident. According to court documents, the pair had met and drank on Baker Street in Gary—Mahaffey reportedly consumed an entire fifth of tequila while the woman drank a smaller bottle of hard liquor. They agreed to split the cost of a motel room in Merrillville.
Inside the room, Mahaffey allegedly became angry after the woman refused to “give him a blowjob and would only give him a handjob.” When she noticed money was missing and questioned him about it, Mahaffey became more upset, reportedly calling her a “b**ch” and a “wh*re.” He then allegedly punched her eight to nine times and bit her on the shoulder.
The woman also told police Mahaffey urinated on her clothing and into the room’s ice bucket before fleeing.
She was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and treated for a bite wound on her shoulder, scratches on her arm, and a bleeding laceration to her inner lip that required stitches.

• Battery Resulting in Moderate Bodily Injury – Level 6 Felony
Mahaffey was lodged in the Lake County Jail on July 19, 2025.
