Gary Man Arrested After Fleeing Police
At approximately 10:33 AM on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, an officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department observed a Chevy crossover SUV traveling at 55 miles an hour in a posted 45 mile an hour zone heading westbound on East Dunes Highway in Gary, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. The vehicle also failed to properly utilize turn signals.
The officer attempted to make a traffic stop on East Dunes Highway near I-65, but the SUV failed to stop, disregarding traffic signals. The SUV continued to flee eventually into oncoming traffic, causing other vehicles to swerve. When the driver of the SUV attempted to turn westbound onto 4th Avenue, the vehicle struck a curb, disabling it. The driver fled on foot, at which time the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Aviation Unit helicopter tracked him and observed him enter the rear of a yard in the 400 block of Johnson Street. The subject fled, but officers were able to place him into custody.
Officers retrieved two .40 caliber handgun magazines from the SUV; one fully loaded, and one with no ammunition.
A 21-year-old male, from Gary, is being held at the Lake County Jail pending criminal charges.
The case is still under investigation.
