
Gary Man Arrested for Beating Man to Death Behind Economy Liquors
Gary- A Gary man has been arrested after court documents state he brutally beat another man to death behind Economy Liquors on July 23, 2025, in Gary. Surveillance video captured the prolonged attack, and investigators say the victim never initiated any combat.
According to court documents , detectives responded to 5150 Broadway and found the victim lying in an alley with a large amount of blood on and around him. Near the body, investigators observed a large tree branch and multiple broken sticks with a red blood-like substance on them. The Lake County Coroner’s Office determined the victim, identified as Shantwoin Jones, died from blunt force trauma and ruled the death a homicide.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from Economy Liquors that showed Jones approached by a male carrying a large tree branch. After a brief conversation, Jones attempted to walk away before the male began striking him repeatedly. The beating lasted about sixteen minutes, with Jones holding up his hands in a defensive posture.
Additional video from the day before the attack showed the same male wearing the same hat and clothing. Detectives later identified the suspect as Jerry Lee Lewis, 63, using an Indiana BMV photo that matched the individual seen in the footage. The vehicle involved was registered to a woman who has a prior domestic report involving Lewis.
