Gary Man Charged After Foot Chase and Gun Recovery
A Gary man is facing multiple criminal charges after allegedly fleeing law enforcement while in possession of a firearm during a daylight foot pursuit on July 2, 2025. The suspect, who has a history of felony convictions, was apprehended after police responded to reports of a man seen carrying a handgun near West 45th Avenue in Gary.
According to court documents, officers were conducting an unrelated traffic stop in the area when a concerned citizen reported a man with a firearm. The suspect, later identified as Jamarri Delvon Walker, 30, was observed walking with his hand near his waistband—an action consistent with carrying a concealed weapon. When officers approached, Walker appeared nervous and began jogging away.
At the intersection of West 45th Avenue and Buchanan Street, officers attempted to engage Walker, who allegedly responded, “For what?” When told he needed to speak with them, Walker reportedly stated, “I got weed on me”, and then fled westbound on foot. Officers pursued and ultimately detained him near 45th Avenue and Lincoln Street.
A backpack which Walker was wearing revealed a black handgun magazine containing 10 live rounds of 9mm ammunition. Officers then began canvassing the area to locate the firearm itself.
K-9 Sabre was brought in to assist and alerted to a heavily wooded, brushy area near the pursuit route. A short time later, officers recovered a Taurus Millennium G2 9mm semi-automatic handgun with a magazine containing four live rounds. The weapon was made safe and secured as evidence.
After being advised of his Miranda rights, Walker reportedly stated the gun belonged to “his homie” and that he was holding it for him, though he claimed not to remember where he discarded it. He also acknowledged having prior felony convictions.
A review of his criminal history confirmed that Walker is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to multiple felony convictions, including:
• Aggravated Robbery While Armed With a Firearm – 2013 (Champaign County, IL)
• Defacing Identification Marks on a Firearm – 2019 (Champaign County, IL)
• Robbery – 2013 (Champaign County, IL)
Charges Filed on July 3, 2025:
• Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon – Level 4 Felony
• Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun with Prior Felony Conviction within 15 Years – Level 5 Felony
• Resisting Law Enforcement (Fleeing on Foot) – Class A Misdemeanor
Walker is currently lodged in the Lake County Jail.
