Gary Man Charged After Police Investigate Drug Purchases in July

GARY — A 54-year-old Gary man is facing multiple felony drug charges following a July investigation into suspected narcotics activity.

According to court documents, police investigated drug purchases involving a residence in the 1900 block of Georgia Street in Gary. The investigation led to two incidents in late July 2025 in which a total of 21.95 grams of methamphetamine and 6.41 grams of fentanyl were obtained over a five-day period.

A search warrant was executed at the residence on July 29, 2025. Inside, officers located 1.1 grams of cocaine and a digital scale with white residue on a TV stand in a bedroom. Additional currency was also recovered from the living room.

Darod Alexander Wheeler, 54, was located inside the home and confirmed it was his residence. He was taken into custody and charged on July 30, 2025, with the following:

    •    Dealing in a Narcotic Drug – Fentanyl, more than 5 grams (Level 2 Felony)

    •    Dealing in Methamphetamine – 10 grams or more (Level 2 Felony)

    •    Dealing in Methamphetamine – Between 5 and 10 grams (Level 3 Felony)

    •    Two counts of Dealing in a Narcotic Drug – Between 1 and 5 grams (Level 4 Felony)

    •    Maintaining a Common Nuisance – Controlled Substances (Level 6 Felony)

    •    Possession of Cocaine – less than 5 grams (Level 6 Felony)

Wheeler is currently lodged in the Lake County Jail.
