Gary Man Charged in LaPorte Murder Following Fatal Dispute
LaPorte- A 36-year-old Gary man has been charged with murder after police say he strangled a 58-year-old male during a domestic dispute, according to court documents filed in LaPorte Circuit Court.
On September 28, 2025, around 8:50 p.m., police and EMS were dispatched to a home in the 1400 block of Jefferson Avenue in LaPorte for a medical emergency. The victim was found unconscious, treated at the scene, and transported to Northwest Health La Porte, where he was later pronounced dead .
Later that night, investigators were contacted by a relative who reported that the suspect admitted to strangling the victim after an argument that began over a speaker system. According to statements, the suspect allegedly pointed a shotgun at the victim before the altercation turned physical .
A female family member reported that while she was at work, the suspect came to her workplace and urged her to check on the victim. When she arrived home, she found the man unresponsive on the couch and called 911. She later told investigators that the suspect admitted he “upped a gun” and “laid him out,” though he denied shooting the victim .
A child inside the residence told police he saw the suspect punch the victim and place him in a headlock. He said the man was later found lying facedown on the couch .
Another witness said the suspect entered a room carrying a shotgun and stated, “this is what happens when people don’t listen to me.”
The suspect was located later that night outside a hospital and identified as Breon Ware. Officers attempted to detain him, but he resisted, fought with officers, and kicked one in the thigh before being subdued and taken into custody .
During a court-authorized search of the residence, investigators recovered a black shotgun with pink shells under Ware’s mattress, along with a second shotgun in the basement. Records showed Ware had a 2013 felony conviction for dealing cocaine, classifying him as a serious violent felon barred from possessing firearms .
On the morning of September 30, 2025, an autopsy was conducted at Franciscan Health Michigan City Hospital. After the autopsy was concluded, the pathologist informed investigators that he was listing the cause of death as homicide .
