Gary Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Alleged Shooting Outside Residence

Gijeon Dupree Spence, of Gary, is facing felony charges after police say he fired multiple rounds at his ex-girlfriend and another individual following a series of escalating encounters that began at a school and continued through two gas stations before ending in gunfire outside a residence.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on February 27, 2026 and spanned multiple locations throughout Gary.

Police say the situation began around 10:15 a.m. as the victim was dropping her children off at school. During that time, Spence allegedly began repeatedly calling and texting her. The victim reported Spence drove past the school in a white Ford F-150 with red Milwaukee toolboxes in the bed, circled the area, and ultimately broke the mirror off her vehicle while she ignored him.

Later, the victim picked up a friend and her cousin before going to a gas station in the 1500 block of Broadway. After spotting Spence in the area, they attempted to avoid him and left, but stopped at another gas station in the 1400 block of Broadway to get fuel.

Police say Spence followed them and backed his truck into a parking space directly in front of their vehicle. As the victim’s cousin approached, investigators say Spence put his truck in drive and attempted to hit him.

Police say the cousin then pulled out a handgun and fired approximately three shots at Spence’s truck in what was described as self-defense. The group immediately fled the gas station and returned to the victim’s residence in the 1400 block of Jefferson Street.

Surveillance video reviewed by investigators reportedly corroborated this sequence of events. Police say the footage shows Spence backing into position, driving toward the male, and later exiting his truck carrying what was described as a black AR-style pistol inside the gas station.

After returning home, the victim reported she saw Spence arrive and park near her residence. She told investigators she was in fear for her life and initially did not want to leave.

A short time later, as the victim and another individual exited the residence to get into a vehicle, police say Spence produced a firearm, pointed it directly at both individuals, and fired multiple rounds.

Both individuals reported Spence shot directly at them but they were not struck. Police say as he fled onto 15th Avenue, Spence allegedly pointed the firearm again and fired another shot toward the victim.

While officers were investigating the shooting, Spence separately called police claiming he had been shot at at a gas station. Investigators noted it took him more than 20 minutes to report the incident and determined his account was not consistent with surveillance footage or other evidence.

Investigators confirmed Spence is classified as a serious violent felon, with prior convictions including:
• Reckless Homicide (Class C Felony – 2008)
• Dealing in a Controlled Substance (Class B Felony – 2009)
• Carrying a Handgun Without a License (Level 5 Felony – 2019)

Police say Spence also has a pending felony burglary case filed in 2025 involving the same victim in this case.

Additionally, an active protection order was in place at the time of the incident, prohibiting Spence from contacting or approaching the victim and her children. The order had been served in December 2025.

Charges filed March 18,2026:
• Attempted Murder – Level 1 Felony
• Aggravated Battery (Attempt) – Level 3 Felony (2 counts)
• Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon – Level 4 Felony
• Stalking While Armed with a Deadly Weapon – Level 4 Felony
• Stalking (Violation of Protective Order) – Level 5 Felony
