
Gary Man Charged With Double Murder
On August 29, 2025, Alex Dominque Russell, 35, of Gary, was arrested for the July 31 murders of Dante Givens and Deon Stewart, both of Illinois. Detective Jason Szemes of the Indiana State Excise Police and Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force secured murder charges against Russell on August 5. With the assistance of the United States Marshalls and the Indiana State Police, he was apprehended in Gary pursuant to a search and arrest warrant. Dante Givens and Deon Stewart were shot and killed near the Village Shopping Center in Gary. Detectives were able to recover video evidence, social media evidence, and witness statements identifying Russell as the suspect, and execute numerous search warrants furthering the investigation.
Russell is charged with two counts of murder, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, unlawful carrying of a handgun, driving while suspended, and a felony firearm enhancement. He faces upwards of 150 years in prison if convicted.
Detective Szemes was assisted by other members of the Homicide Task Force, including with the Indiana State Police, the East Chicago Police Department, the Gary Police Department, and the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office thanks all assisting agencies for their prompt investigation and dedication.
