Gary Man Charged with Possession of Machine Gun

According to court documents, Gary police responded around 8:20 p.m. on June 19 to 35th Avenue and Lincoln Street after receiving a report of shots fired. Officers located a residence and a vehicle that had been struck by gunfire and recovered shell casings at the scene.

While on scene, officers were advised that three individuals matching the description of those involved had been seen walking south near 37th Avenue and Lincoln Street. Officers located three males in the area, and when they activated emergency lights, the group fled on foot.

TreSean Dontrell Monroe, 21, was found hiding in the 3800 block of Johnson Street. A Glock 17 9mm handgun was recovered directly beneath him. The firearm was equipped with an extended magazine, a laser/light attachment, and had been modified with an attached “Glock switch,” a device that enables fully automatic fire. The gun also had an obliterated serial number on the lower receiver and contained 32 live rounds.

Monroe was transported to the Gary Police Department and booked without incident. During a post-Miranda interview, he admitted to possessing the firearm and acknowledged knowing it was equipped with a “switch” that allowed it to fire automatically. He gave conflicting accounts of how he obtained the gun and stated he believed it was stolen.

Monroe is currently lodged in the Lake County Jail.
