Gary Man Charged with Possession of Machine Gun Following Traffic Stop
A Gary man is facing a felony firearm charge after police say they discovered a modified Glock pistol and marijuana during a traffic stop on July 15, 2025, in Gary.

According to court documents, a Lake County sheriff’s deputy stopped a blue Dodge SUV near 23rd Avenue and Harrison Street after observing it lacked a rear license plate and detecting a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
The SUV was occupied by four individuals, including Randell Charles Moore, 21, who was seated in the front passenger seat. During a search of the vehicle, officers located a multicolored Marvel backpack on the front passenger floorboard directly beneath Moore’s feet.
Inside the backpack, police say they found a Glock 19 handgun equipped with an extended magazine and a silver Auto-Sear Kit—a device commonly referred to as a “switch”—which attaches to the rear of the firearm and converts it into a fully automatic weapon. The magazine was loaded with 31 rounds, and a live round was chambered. A bag of raw marijuana was also found in the front pocket of the backpack.
Moore was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities later learned he had a full extradition warrant out of Wisconsin. He was transported to the Lake County Jail and turned over to jail staff without incident.
Charge filed on July 17, 2025:
• Possession of a Machine Gun – Level 5 Felony
Moore is currently lodged in the Lake County Jail.
