Gary Man Charged With Railroad Mischief and Theft After Cutting Signal Wires

Manuel Earl Marquez, 21, of Gary, has been charged in Lake County after authorities say he was caught cutting wires from a railroad signal box in an attempt to scrap them for money.

According to court documents, officers were dispatched on June 27, 2025, to the area of 8th Avenue and Colfax after a signal maintainer with Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad reported someone tampering with a signal box. When officers arrived, they found Marquez with his head inside the box, several visibly cut wires on the ground, and a large teal kitchen knife nearby.

Marquez allegedly told officers he was cutting wires to scrap for money and said he did not believe the tracks were in use. He also stated that he was homeless and trying to get money. Railroad officials estimated the damage at approximately $50 and confirmed there was no interruption to the signal system.

Marquez was taken into custody at the scene and is currently lodged in the Lake County Jail.

Charges Filed June 28, 2025:

    •    Railroad Mischief: Level 6 Felony

    •    Theft: Class A Misdemeanor

    •    Criminal Mischief: Class B Misdemeanor
