Gary Man Confesses To Murdering Mother

A Gary man has confessed to the murder of his mother back from July of 2018, according to court documents.

The man now identified as Jamel Scott, 53, of Gary turned himself into Lake County authorities this week stating he was confessing to the murder of his mother, 78 year old, Sandra Scott in July of 2018. Scott said he needed to get this off his chest.

Scott stated he was released from prison in 2018 and was staying at his mother’s home in Gary in between being homeless. Scott told detectives he would beat on his mother because of noises she would make when she slept and he didn’t have the patience to take care of her medical needs at the time. The mother who had a hip replacement while Scott was in prison and was on multiple medications for her heart condition as well, records stated. At one point Scott became so irritated from lack of sleep he stated he pushed his mother down two flights of stairs to the basement where she laid from multiple injuries and away from her medications.

Scott went to Methodist Hospital to ask for help since he did not have phone saying he found his mother on the bottom of the stairs and believed she had fallen. He also stated she was cold to the touch with lacerations on her. Scott told police in 2018 he got home around 5 PM and found her where she laid and couldn’t move her because he was fatigued so he went for help.

The Lake County Coroner report stated the overall cause of death was blockage of arteries. Also noted in the report were numerous abrasions, 12 rib fractures, and the heart medicine that was upstairs away from her. With the new evidence presented it would make sense of being thrown down two flights of stairs and a heart attack induced by the stress of the fall & abuse with no medication for the heart condition.

Jamel Scott has since been charged with Murder a Level 1 Felony and Neglect of a Dependent resulting in death. Scott has an extensive criminal background from before prison and after prison.
