Gary Man Found Exiting Basement Window After Caller Reports Suspicious Moped
A Gary man has been charged after police said he was found climbing out of a broken basement window at a home in the 2400 block of West 73rd Avenue.
According to court documents, officers were dispatched around 2:17 p.m. on September 5, 2025, after a caller reported a white moped parked in a neighbor’s backyard and a shattered basement window. Police said they observed broken glass and a cell phone outside the window and heard rustling coming from inside.
The homeowner confirmed no one should be inside, and officers ordered the individual to come out. A man identified as Nicholas Devonte Jackson exited through the broken window and was placed in wrist restraints. Jackson allegedly told officers that when he argues with his girlfriend he “breaks into abandoned houses to sleep” and claimed he was the only person inside.
With the homeowner’s permission, police searched the residence, confirmed no one else was inside, and learned Jackson had an active Lake County warrant. He was trespassed from the property, his moped was towed, and he was transported to the Lake County Jail.
Charges filed:
