Gary Man Sentenced to 70 Years for 2021 Murder

A Gary man has been sentenced to 70 years in prison for the 2021 shooting death of Quintez Johnson.

Tyrone Twyan Reno was convicted by a Lake County jury in connection with the November 15, 2021, homicide at an apartment on West 5th Avenue in Gary. Police found Johnson deceased on a couch from gunshot wounds to the head. Surveillance footage showed Reno entering the apartment and fleeing minutes later with a firearm.

Investigators later identified Reno through security footage, official records, and police observation the same day.

Reno was sentenced on June 13, 2025, by Judge Vasquez.

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter released the following statement:

“Tyrone Reno, who was found guilty by a Lake County jury was sentenced today. The Court imposed a sentence of 60 years for the murder of Quintez Johnson and 10 years for a firearm enhancement charge.

This sentencing reflects the seriousness of the crime and the value our community places on justice and accountability. I commend the jury for their service and thank Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Tim Kasey DaFoe and Milana Petersen, along with the Gary Police Department, Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force who worked diligently to bring this case to resolution.

Our hearts remain with the victim’s family as they continue to navigate their grief. While no sentence can undo the harm caused, we hope today’s outcome provides some measure of justice and peace.”
