Gary Mayor Prince Announces New Amendment After Gas Station Homicide
Days after calling on President Joe Biden to sign an executive order declaring violence in our communities a national public health crisis, City of Gary Mayor Jerome A. Prince announced the Wallace Broadnax Amendment to an existing security camera ordinance. The amendment is a significant step in the Mayor’s campaign for improved public safety measures at certain local businesses.
Mayor Prince announced under the Wallace Broadnax Amendment all gas stations will be required to have armed security from dusk until dawn, if a violent crime has been committed in the business within the last twenty four months that gas station will be required to have twenty four hour armed security.
Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter also provided some updates on the two juveniles that are being charged with Wallace Broadnax’s tragic murder. The two individuals ages 14 and 15 are currently being held on numerous charges; Murder, felony murder, attempted armed robbery and attempted armed robbery serious bodily injury. Prosecutor Bernard Carter and Mayor Prince both urged how important having working security cameras are as well.
Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez and Gary Police Department Chief Brian Evans also spoke on the late Mr. Broadnax and gave thanks to all involved on bringing the suspects to justice very quickly.
Many members of the Broadnax family also attended the conference, including his nephew, Anthony Broadnax, who also spoke to the crowd.
Mayor Jerome Prince along with his team, hopes with the recent horrific acts of violence the Common Council will approve this amendment and make the City of Gary a safer place for the members and visitors of Gary.
