Gary Mayor Prince Denounced A Tuesday Council Meeting

“I am embarrassed and disappointed by the behavior of many of the Gary Common Council members at the most recent Council meeting Tuesday night,” Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said Thursday. “Instead of partnering with the Administration to make the City of Gary a better place to live, work and play, several Council members continue to engage in politics and personal attacks.”

There was absolutely no reason for any of the Council members to single out individual employees. One city employee was identified by name, and her personal, financial information was disclosed in the public square. The deputy mayor and I have talked to that employee and apologized to her for the way she was treated last night. Needless to say, she was humiliated and embarrassed.

“I am also disappointed that five Council members voted to table the ordinance changing Mr.Trent A. McCain’s official title from “Chief of Staff” to “Deputy Mayor”, Prince stated. “As the Mayor, I have the statutory authority to place Mr. McCain in that position and to compensate him accordingly.”

“To overcome the Council’s obstruction, I will do just that and invoke my statutory power and withdraw the ordinance from consideration,” Prince added.

“The 2019 Election is long over. It’s time to set aside petty political ambitions and focus on what the voters of Gary elected us all to do…lead and serve. I call on these several Council members to cut out these political shenanigans and help the Administration move our City forward.”
