Gary Police Checkpoint Nets Multiple Arrests

On September 6, 2020 the Gary Police Department conducted a Sobriety Checkpoint from 6:00pm until 2:00 AM in Gary Indiana. During the course of the checkpoint one driver was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and taken into custody. Two drivers were cited for having open alcoholic beverages in their vehicle. One driver was taken into custody for a firearm violation, one person for a warrant and two people were taken into custody for narcotics. Several additional drivers were arrested for various license violations and released on scene with a court date. These checkpoints are funded by grants from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute Traffic Safety Administration and must be used for traffic enforcement.

The Goal when conducting checkpoints is not to inconvenience drivers but to deter those that are impaired from getting behind the wheel, Gary Police said. One person dies approximately every 50 minutes from an alcohol related crash. Reducing the number of impaired drivers on the roadways means safer travels for all. We would like to remind everyone to plan ahead when they know they will be consuming alcoholic beverages, have a designated driver selected prior to going out or use a ride share service.
