Gary SWAT Team Involved In Fatal Shooting This Morning
At approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday, detectives with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department were requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Gary.
The shooting occurred at approximately 6:40 a.m. in the 600 block of Adams Street, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.
The Gary Police Department SWAT Team executed a search warrant following community reports of narcotics sales and distribution, Gary Police told RNS.
During the operation, the individual identified in the warrant exited the rear of the building and engaged officers with a firearm, prompting officers to fire upon the individual, who later succumbed to their injuries.
“The safety of our city relies on the partnership between our officers and the community,” said Chief Cannon. “We ask residents to stay alert and report crime, because every tip brings us one step closer to a safer Gary.”
The Lake County Detective Bureau and Lake County CSI are handling the officer-involved shooting.
UPDATE – The Lake County Coroner has identified the deceased as David Martin, 46, of Gary. His death was ruled a homicide by multiple gun shot wounds.
