Gary Teen Charged With Attempted Murder After Girlfriend Shot

According to court documents, Gary police responded to a shooting on September 5, 2025, in the 3700 block of Broadway. Officers found a woman lying on the ground beside a blue Ford with multiple bullet holes. She told officers she had been shot by her 17-year-old boyfriend during an argument at his home.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the victim, who had been in a three-year relationship with the suspect, stated from the hospital that the shooting happened after an argument over something seen in her cell phone. She confirmed the suspect was her boyfriend and said the dispute was about another male. Medical staff reported she suffered a gunshot wound to her lower left back and an injury to her head. Due to the seriousness of the wound, she was transported to Chicago for further treatment.

Police later located the suspect on the 4000 block of Ohio Street. Officers, with the assistance of his mother, convinced him to come outside and surrender. A firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered from inside the residence. Body-camera footage also documented the scene on Broadway, showing the victim on the ground beside the shot-up vehicle, again identifying the teen as the shooter.

Charges filed against the teen on September 6, 2025:

• Attempted Murder — Attempted intentional killing of another (Level 1 Felony)

• Aggravated Battery — posing a substantial risk of death (Level 3 Felony)
