Griffith Fire Announces Firefighter Of The Year Award
Firefighter Derrick Huzzie Awarded Firefighter of the Year
The Griffith Fire Department takes great pride and ownership in their responsibilities to the community and especially their responsibility to those in need of assistance. Most residents will never realize the efforts that are undertaken behind the scenes. Training and preparing for calls, maintaining equipment and apparatus, fire prevention, presentations and community events; help them prepare for their responsibilities on scene.
This ethos of service to others has not been missed by the 2019 Firefighter of the Year, Derrick Huzzie. In his 6 years of service to the community, Derrick has become an extremely reliable and trustworthy firefighter on emergency scenes. Recently, he has taken on another role running crews and even fire scenes when called upon to do so.
Derrick is one of the most reliable firefighters this department has ever had. Always going above and beyond to complete tasks, take on projects and make sure his station’s apparatus and equipment are operating at a high level.
A student of the fire service, Derrick has continued his education that only a select few before him have ever done. Last year he completed 216 hours of department training and most recently completed another 120 hours to become a certified fire investigator. Derrick asks his officers questions to constantly better himself and those around him. Leading into another role Derrick has taken on, a firehouse mentor, passing along his experiences, knowledge and passion for the fire service to the newest recruits.
