Griffith House Fire Quickly Extinguished
Shortly before 3:30pm Tuesday, Griffith Fire Department was called to the 800 block N Rensselaer for a Structure Fire. Two Griffith Police Officers were first on scene and noticed heavy smoke coming from the residence. Officers were able to secure the residents as well as numerous pets, Commander Keith Martin of the Griffith Police said. The two patrol officers then used fire extinguishers from their cars in an attempt to extinguish the fire which appears to have originated around the stove in the kitchen but were unsuccessful with the quickly spreading flames, Martin stated. Fire Department arrived on scene and had the fire under control within about 15 minutes. The damage was mostly concentrated to the Kitchen area. Griffith Fire had mutual aid from Highland, Lake Ridge, Gary, and Merrillville who was disregarded while enroute.
