Griffith Man Charged After Stabbing During Argument
Griffith- A Griffith man has been charged in Lake County after police say he stabbed another man during a late-night argument at a home in the 400 block of Woodlawn Avenue, according to court documents.
Police were dispatched around 12:40 a.m. on September 29, 2025, to a reported stabbing. Officers arrived to find a man bleeding from the chest while another male restrained Tyler Kelly Dunlap, 29, of Griffith, on the floor until police took him into custody.
Court documents state that the group had been drinking when an argument broke out between Dunlap and the victim over “who was bigger.” Witnesses told police Dunlap left the kitchen, returned with a knife, and stabbed the man, who exclaimed, “Oh he just stabbed me.”
The victim told officers he and Dunlap had been joking around when the stabbing happened. He was treated at a local hospital for a deep chest wound that required four stitches.
In an interview, Dunlap admitted grabbing what he described as a “K-Bar” knife but claimed he acted in self-defense after feeling threatened. Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage inside the home, which they said showed Dunlap lunging with the knife.
Charges filed September 30,2025:
• F5 – Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon
• F5 – Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury
Dunlap was lodged in the Lake County Jail on September 29, 2025.
