Griffith Man Charged With Dealing After Search Recovers Drugs and Firearms
Griffith- Richard Leo Cowan, 61, of Griffith, has been charged after investigators recovered psilocybin mushrooms, methamphetamine, cocaine, cash, and firearms during a court-authorized search of his home.
According to court documents, investigators began looking into a controlled substance case in September and October 2025 tied to a residence in the 700 block of South Indiana Avenue in Griffith.
The warrant was executed on October 2, 2025. Just before entry, Cowan exited the residence. Inside, officers located 113 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, 151 grams of marijuana and THC-labeled gummies, five digital scales, a document described as a drug ledger, and several hundred plastic baggies commonly used to package narcotics.
In a first-floor office, police reported seizing 2.4 grams of methamphetamine and 0.5 grams of cocaine. A safe in the same office contained two revolver handguns along with $6,800 in U.S. currency.

• Dealing in a Schedule I Controlled Substance: Possession with Intent, at least 28g — Level F2
• Possession of Methamphetamine, less than 5g, Enhancing Circumstance — Level F5
• Possession of Cocaine, less than 5g, Enhancing Circumstance — Level F5
• Possession of Methamphetamine, less than 5g — Level F6
• Possession of Cocaine, less than 5g — Level F6
• Maintaining a Common Nuisance (Controlled Substances) — Level F6
• Possession of Marijuana — Class B Misdemeanor
Cowan is currently lodged in the Lake County Jail.
