Habitual Offender Crashes Into Police Car After Fleeing

On January 2, 2024, at approximately 11:26 PM, a Schererville Police Officer observed a red Nissan Sentra traveling westbound on US 30 at Hendricks St at a high rate of speed, according to Schererville Police.

The Officer was able to catch up to the vehicle at US 30 and Cline Ave and initiated a traffic stop. After briefly stopping, the Nissan sped away and continued to travel westbound on US 30.

Schererville Police were able to successfully use stop sticks on the vehicle at US 30 and Fountain Park Dr. The vehicle then continued westbound on US 30 with a flat tire until it stopped just west of Calumet Ave, where it crashed into a fully marked Schererville Police Car. Schererville and Dyer Police immediately took the driver and passenger into custody.

The driver, Terry Wayne Kilburn of Merrillville, is facing charges & citations for the following: Unsafe Lane Movement on Road with 2 or More Lanes-Moving from one lane to another without signaling,Driving Left of Center, Speeding, Open Alcoholic Beverage Container During Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Resisting Law Enforcement but uses a vehicle, Driving While Suspended: Knowing Violation and Prior Conviction w/in 10 Years, Criminal Recklessness, Reckless Driving Drive at unreasonable high or low speed so to endanger safety, Unsafe slow down or stopping a vehicle w/o giving audible or turn signal, and Operating with Expired Plates.

Kilburn is no stranger to the law in the Region with numerous cases documented from Theft, Intimidation, Disorderly Conduct, a handful of Police Pursuits, Strangulation, Domestic Battery, Leaving the scene of an accident, and an active warrant for possession of a legend drug to name a few from the last two years.

The passenger, (longhair) identified as James Grigsby of Merrillville, was charged with Unlawful Possession or use of a Legend Drug.
