Hammond Man Convicted in Domestic Violence and Standoff Case

Hammond  – A Hammond man has been convicted on multiple felony charges following a violent domestic incident that escalated into a standoff with police earlier this summer.

On Tuesday, Lake County Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter announced that Criminal Court Judge Gina Jones found Roberto Miranda, Jr., 30, of Hammond, guilty after a bench trial stemming from a July 2, 2025, incident at a home on Walnut Avenue.

Miranda was convicted on the following charges:

• Criminal Confinement (Level 4 Felony)

• Strangulation (Level 6 Felony)

• Domestic Battery Resulting in Moderate Bodily Injury (Level 6 Felony)

• Domestic Battery (two counts: Level 6 Felony and Class A Misdemeanor)

• Resisting Law Enforcement (Class A Misdemeanor)

According to Hammond Police reports, officers were dispatched to the 6900 block of Walnut Avenue around 2:30 p.m. on July 2 for a domestic disturbance. The victim told officers she and Miranda had argued over accusations involving her father. She alleged that Miranda placed her in a chokehold, dragged her through the home, and ripped out her nose ring while their three-month-old child was present in the residence.

Responding officers observed red marks, scratches, and other injuries on her neck and chest. When officers attempted to make contact with Miranda, he refused to exit the home. At one point, he placed the infant in a car seat on the porch but barricaded himself inside.

The Hammond SWAT team and negotiators were called to the scene after Miranda continued to resist orders. Officers eventually forced entry into the home, where Miranda tried to evade capture by crawling into a hidden space and attempting to escape through a shed window. He was taken into custody after a physical struggle with SWAT officers.

Judge Jones ruled in favor of the prosecution, citing strong evidence presented by Hammond Police officers and testimony from Bucio. Prosecutor Carter praised the efforts of Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Michael Stewart and Paul Namie for securing the convictions.

“This case is a reminder of the critical work our law enforcement officers and prosecutors do every day to protect victims and hold violent offenders accountable,” Carter said.

Miranda is scheduled to be sentenced on October 10, 2025. He faces the possibility of a lengthy prison term based on the felony convictions.
