Hammond Police Arrest Theft Suspects Caught In The Act
On May 3, 2023, at approximately 3:05 A.M., the Hammond Police Department was conducting routine business checks in the area of 7700 Cabela Dr. Upon reaching the parking lot of Cabela’s, an officer observed a panel van parked behind a semi-trailer. As the officer approached the van, two black males were observed at the rear of the semi-trailer holding bolt cutters and cutting the lock to the trailer doors attempting to gain entry.
The suspects observed the patrol vehicle as the officer activated his emergency lights. The suspects dropped the bolt cutters and fled on foot, making their way inside the van and fled in the vehicle. The Hammond Police Department officer advised of the situation and engaged in a pursuit of the vehicle.
Additional Hammond Police Department officers engaged in the pursuit. The suspect van merged onto 80/94 eastbound and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department was notified. The pursuit continued east on 80/94. As the suspects approached the Burr exit, a Lake County Officer engaged in the pursuit. While on I65 southbound, Lake County PD was then hit by the suspect vehicle. As the pursuit continued east, two more Lake County Officers engaged in the pursuit. The suspect van became disabled after striking the concrete barrier. Three subjects were taken into custody without incident.
All three subjects were transported to the Hammond City Jail for booking. The identities of the suspects will be made public when available. Hammond Police Chief William Short said “This is a great example of how law enforcement agencies work together because we are all fighting the same fight. To remove crime from our streets.”
The potential charges for the suspects are attempted theft and resisting law enforcement. The Hammond Police Department thanked the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police for their assistance in apprehending the suspects.
