Hammond Police Charge Teens With Murder After SWAT Raids
On the morning of February 18, 2026, the Hammond Police Department SWAT Team, working in coordination with the Northwest Regional SWAT Team, conducted a targeted law-enforcement operation that resulted in the arrest of two suspects connected to a January homicide investigation.

Arrested were 18-year-old Angelo Matela and a 15-year-old juvenile male in connection with a shooting homicide that occurred on January 14, 2026, at approximately 5:50 p.m. The victim was shot at a separate location and subsequently drove himself to Briar East Liquors, where he reported that he had been shot. The victim was identified as 19-year-old Armando Velasquez.
Matela has been formally charged with two counts of Murder and one count of Attempted Robbery. Charges related to the juvenile suspect are currently pending.
The SWAT operations were conducted without incident at locations in the 6500 block of McCook Avenue and the 6600 block of Kansas Avenue.
“This arrest reflects a month of detailed investigative work and strong collaboration between our department, regional partners, and the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office,” said Chief Jeffrey Long. “While nothing can undo the loss suffered by the victim’s family, we remain committed to holding those responsible fully accountable and ensuring justice is pursued.”
