Hammond SWAT Safely Removes Suicidal Man From Garage

On Friday, December 4, at approximately 11:50 AM, Hammond police received information that a possible suicidal subject was barricaded inside of a garage in the 1800 block of Sophie Lane, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg of The Hammond Police.

Officers arrived and spoke to the 36-year-old male subject who was in the garage and would not come out, Kellogg told RNS. The male implied that he had a weapon and stated he was going to shoot the police and fire department personnel present. At that time Hammond Police SWAT and negotiator teams were dispatched to the scene.

Negotiators spoke with the subject in an attempt to have him leave the garage, Kellogg said. Those attempts were unsuccessful. The decision was made to use pepper based gas to safely remove the subject. The male came out of the garage with no injuries or further incident and was taken into custody, Police said.
