Hazmat Situation In EC Closes Indy
Southbound traffic on Indianapolis Blvd from Chicago Ave to 151st Street will be closed due to a tanker truck leaking an unknown tar like substance on the street, according to the East Chicago Police. Southbound traffic will reopen once the spill is cleaned up. Use Railroad Avenue to 152nd as an alternate route. East Chicago Fire Department responded and found a semi leaking product. The substance is creating very slick road conditions according to Assistant Chief Carlos Aburto. Fire crews blocked off any runoff from getting into sewer systems. The semi was coming from Safety Kleen and they are responding with a contracted clean up crew. Aburto stated this was a Level 2 Hazmat situation and was quickly mitigated by his department. The Lake County Hazmat Team is assisting the East Chicago Fire Department.
