High-Speed Chase in Lake County Ends with Arrest, Child Found in Car

A routine traffic stop escalated into a dangerous high-speed chase Tuesday afternoon, ending with the arrest of a male driver and the discovery of a young child in the vehicle.

According to court documents, a Lake County Sheriff Officer attempted to pull over a gray Nissan Sentra around 2:33 p.m. near Burr Street and the westbound ramp of I-80/94 for failing to signal a lane change and displaying an expired license plate. As the Officer approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly sped off, prompting a pursuit.

The vehicle reportedly reached speeds of up to 100 mph, weaving between lanes and using the inside and outside shoulders of the busy interstate, creating a significant hazard to other motorists. The pursuit continued until the suspect lost control near Indianapolis Boulevard, causing the vehicle to spin out and crash into a concrete barrier.

Police took the driver into custody and he was identified as Maikai T. Calloway, 22, of Gary. Also in the vehicle was a female passenger and a four-year-old boy. The female passenger told authorities that both she and the child were shaken but not injured.

Officers also discovered two small packages containing a green leafy substance, which tested positive for marijuana. The combined weight was approximately 10 grams.

Calloway now faces multiple charges including resisting law enforcement, neglect of a dependent, and possession of marijuana. The case remains under investigation. The child was released to appropriate care.
