High-Speed Motorcycle Chase Ends in Crash, Arrest in Porter County
A high speed motorcycle pursuit in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 13, 2025, ended in a crash and arrest after a rider attempted to flee from police near the Pleasant Valley area.
According to a report from law enforcement, the incident began around 3:08 a.m. when an officer observed a blue Suzuki GSXR-600 motorcycle without a visible license plate at the intersection of SR 249 and US Hwy 20. After maneuvering to get a closer look, the officer identified a temporary Indiana registration and confirmed the rider, Charles Kalberer, was operating the vehicle outside the conditions of his motorcycle permit, an offense under Indiana law due to the time of day.
The officer initially opted to delay the stop until the motorcycle was closer to the rider’s registered address in Pleasant Valley. However, upon activating emergency lights near the park entrance at McCool Road and Valley Drive, Kalberer abruptly made a U-turn and fled southbound, prompting a high speed pursuit.
The chase spanned several rural roads, with speeds exceeding 130 miles per hour at times. Kalberer reportedly ran multiple stop signs and continued to elude police for several miles. The pursuit ended on CR 625 W after Kalberer failed to negotiate a curve, losing control of the motorcycle. The bike veered off the road, resulting in a crash that threw Kalberer from the motorcycle.
Officers immediately provided first aid on scene and called for emergency medical services. Kalberer sustained injuries to his arm, hands, and leg. He was transported to Northwest Health Porter for treatment and was later medically cleared for incarceration.
Kalberer was taken into custody and transported to the Porter County Jail. He faces charges including Resisting Law Enforcement (Level 6 Felony), Reckless Driving (Class C Misdemeanor), and Violation of Specialized Driving Privileges (Class C Misdemeanor). The motorcycle, which suffered disabling damage, was towed from the scene.
