Hobart Man Wanted for Burglary and Numerous Other Charges Fled From Police and was Apprehended by Police K9

On March 28, 2025, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department was patrolling the area of W. Ridge Road and Grant Street. The officer received a License Plate Reader alert that a black Hyundai sedan with an Indiana license plate was traveling NB at SR 912 and Highway Ave. The vehicle in question has a registered owner by the name of Sergio Eliacin, who is wanted for burglary.

According to court documents, the officer confirmed the warrant and observed the vehicle in question traveling eastbound. Upon seeing the officer’s squad car, the vehicle in question then rapidly changed lanes without signaling. Upon initiating a traffic stop, the suspect’s Hyundai signaled left, and then pulled into the left shoulder of the roadway. After the officer exited the vehicle, the Hyundai quickly pulled off and accelerated at a high rate of speed. The officer activated their emergency siren and repositioned his squad car behind the fleeing vehicle.
The suspect’s vehicle continued to flee at a high rate of speed Eastbound on I 80/94 then to I 65 Southbound. According to court documents, the suspect’s vehicle took the W Ridge Road off ramp at an unsafe speed and slid off the road into the grass near the ramp. The suspect’s vehicle recovered and then continued to flee recklessly westbound on Ridge Road. The suspect attempted to turn at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle. The suspect’s vehicle then drove over a curb, into a ditch, and came to a stop in the parking lot at the NE corner of MLK Drive and W 35th Avenue.

The suspect then attempted to flee on foot, according to court documents. The suspect was commanded to show his hands, and the suspect did not comply. The suspect continued to flee on foot southbound towards 35th Avenue. The suspect was hunched and appeared to be holding something in his waist area. The suspect then fled into the wooded area.

According to court documents, the officers set up a perimeter and continued searching for the suspect. When the suspect was located, Gary Police K9 Rush was deployed who engaged the suspect’s leg. The suspect was ignoring all commands to put his hands behind his back. The Gary Fire Department performed a medical evaluation of the suspect and determined the suspect did not need further medical attention and was cleared to be transported to the Lake County Jail. The suspect was positively identified as Sergio Eliacin.

On March 31, 2025, Sergio Eliacin was charged with:
1 – Resisting Law Enforcement- Defendant uses a vehicle: F6 Felony
2 – Resisting Law Enforcement: Class A Misdemeanor
3 – Possession of Marijuana: Class B Misdemeanor
4 – Reckless Driving: Class C Misdemeanor

It should also be noted Sergio Eliacin had the following charges filed on March 4, 2025:
1 – Burglary of a Dwelling: F4 Felony
2 – Burglary: F5 Felony
3 – Residential Entry: F6 Felony
4 & 5 – Theft: Class A Misdemeanor (2 counts)
6 – Invasion of Privacy/Violates Protective Order: Class A Misdemeanor
7 – Invasion of Privacy: Class A Misdemeanor
8 – Criminal Trespass: Class A Misdemeanor
