Hobart Murder Suspect Apprehended

On July 8, 2025, at approximately 5:07 p.m., Hobart Police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Ruta Drive in Hobart, Indiana, for a reported disturbance involving a firearm. Dispatch advised that at least four males were involved and that one had a visible firearm. While officers were en route, dispatch updated that gunshots had been fired and at least one male was on the
ground.

Upon arrival, officers located one male slumped over an apartment landing railing and another male on the ground, alive but suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The male slumped over the railing was pronounced deceased at the scene and later identified as Tristan Tomak-Trevino, age 19, of South Haven, Indiana. The male on the ground was identified as an 18-year- old Hobart resident.

Detectives responded and, through their investigation, identified other individuals who were present during the incident. The investigation revealed that Tomak-Trevino had come to the apartment complex with the intention of selling marijuana to the 18-year-old Hobart man, who was accompanied by two friends. These individuals were identified as a 17-year-old Hobart male and Jordan Carl Meekins, age 18, of Hobart.

Investigators determined that Meekins, the 17-year-old, and the 18-year-old planned to pay Tomak-Trevino with counterfeit money. The attempted transaction escalated into a robbery. Detectives learned that Tomak-Trevino was armed with a handgun, Meekins was armed with a handgun, and the 18-year-old Hobart man possessed two firearms—one of which he displayed during the deal. During the struggle, Tomak-Trevino shot the 18-year-old male, and Meekins then shot Tomak-Trevino from behind.

On July 17, 2025, detectives secured charges of Murder and Murder in the Perpetration of
Robbery against Jordan Carl Meekins. This morning, Meekins was taken into custody in Gary, by the United States Marshals Service Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force, with assistance from Hobart Police Task Force Officers assigned to the unit.

The Hobart Police Department thanked the Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force and the Lake County Sheriff’s CSI Unit along with other responding agencies for their assistance in this investigation.

This remains an active investigation, and additional individuals may be charged as determined by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.
